Finally, a refreshing read! November 30, 2009 Bobby Winstead 15 out of 19 found this review helpful
I will not lie. When I first picked this book up and flipped through it, I had my doubts. After the literary insult that was "The Power of Three" I was skeptical, and it was only my loyalty to the series that left me with sixteen less dollars in my pocket. I put of reading it for a few days, afraid that I was about to enter the plotless filler-infected mess that had become the third series. And even as I picked at the first few chapters, I was worried. Had my favorite feline series finally taken the leap?
But I read on.
Past the first few chapters, reminding us of our Warriors universe, introducing us to some new problems, and reminding us of the last six books, the story began to take shape. A new Main Character was introduced, and although I was unsure at first, I found I liked her spunky attitude and loyalty to her kin. As well as the new character, I was reunited with some old friends, some I had missed, others I hadn't. Lionblaze, who I had despised in the TPOT, caught me now as a sort of flat character, one who seemed to meld into the background. Jayfeather, my second favorite of the original three, surprised me with his maturity and insecurity, and I found his chapters to be thoroughly enticing.
After the first few chapters of dryness, I found with pleasure that the story really started to heat up. A somewhat original plot was introduced, and pleasantly it wasn't about beating around the bush to find the titled 'Fourth Apprentice'. Instead, it was getting right to the point and giving us what we wanted. To have a straightforward answer, here she is, here's what she can do, here's how she does it.
The heart of the book was mostly around the new character, Dovepaw, and her comrades going on a journey to end the drought that had plagued the lake since the beginning of the book. That was okay, nothing warriors hadn't done before. It kept my interest well enough, but I wasn't impressed. What really got my hear racing was the events back at the camp, with Jayfeather and his adventures. Big leaps and bounds were made in the plotline there, and I found myself thoroughly enraptured in it. With what the Erin's are suggesting for the rest of the books, I am delighted. It has the promise of seeing old friends, enemies, and tying up loose ends that were left from any number of the older books. (I don't doubt we'll be seeing a few familiar old faces such as Ashfur, Hollyleaf, Scourge, as well as any number of old ThunderClan heroes.)
In the transition from the giant prologue that was The Power of Three, I feel that the Erins have finished their hinting, poking, and Tigerstar throwing, and have set up loyal Warriors fans for a riveting new ride.
Cats & Adventure December 22, 2009 Reader Views (Austin, Texas) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful

"Warriors: Omen of the Stars: The Fourth Apprentice" by Erin Hunter is a great turning point in the series because the third cat in an ancient prophecy is finally revealed. A terrible drought has struck the cats' territory. All that remains of the formerly grand lake is a small brackish pool which is now fought over by the four clans. All the little animals that the cats rely on for food are dying or dead. The plants are withering. Two cats, Lionblaze and Dovepaw, must go on a dangerous mission to save the clans. Jayfeather must deal with problems closer to home. The cats have survived many things before, but can they survive this?
When a young cat, Dovepaw, has a vision of a beaver dam blocking the river that feeds the lake, will anyone believe her? Thankfully Lionblaze believes her; for he, like Dovepaw, has a powerful special ability, and he is able to convince the clan leader, Firestar, to send a patrol to remove the blockage. Will they be able to defeat the beavers and dismantle dam before it is too late and all the cats die of thirst?
Erin Hunter has written many Warriors books (a whole three series) about four clans of cats that have constantly changing alliances and even wars. The cats' ultimate enemy is the twolegs (humans) who have destroyed the cats' original habitat and continue to terrorize the cats and threaten them with monsters (cars, bulldozers etc...). The books were all very good and were so well written that you can just pick this one up and read it without having read the preceding books. This book, like all her others, ends with a cliff hanger and you will be reaching for the next book. An interesting factoid about Erin Hunter is that she is not one, but three people. That's why the Warriors books keep coming out very fast.
I would recommend "Warriors: Omen of the Stars: The Fourth Apprentice" to people who like cats and adventure. This was a very intriguing book and once you pick it up you won't want to put it down. This is the most recent book in a long Warriors saga, but it was so well written that you can just pick it up and start reading. I can't wait for the next book.
A New Outlook On Warriors May 4, 2010 Tome Raider (California, United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I started reading this book I had very low expectations. This was because the Power of Three books had ended on such a low and sad note (Hollyleaf dies). But, as I started reading I quickly realized how much this series needed Hollyleaf's death to kick off the series. This is the type of book where the reader starts loving it in the first chapter.
The Summary: Still grieving over the death of their sister Hollyleaf, Jayfeather and Lionblaze begin the search for the third cat in the Prophecy. Then two kits are born Ivykit/Ivypaw and Dovekit/Dovepaw. Then, Lionblaze realizes that Dovepaw, his apprentice, can see and hear things no other cat can see, including creatures that are creating a dam to stop the flow of water to the lake!!!!!! With the water amount dropping rapidly no cat is sure if it is a good choice to send cats to fix the problem. Also, tension between Ivypaw and Dovepaw rise. Will the sisters become enemies? Finally, the choice is made. They will send cats to see if the river is blocked. But will any of them return alive? As the other cats go on their quest to see if the river is blocked Jayfeather deals with problems near home.
You will find that you ask the questions that I mentioned, and you'll get them!! If you love books, if you hate books, if you're neutral you'll love this book.
excellent and suspenseful reading February 6, 2010 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read all the other series and this book is by far the best reading. It made me feel as if I was right there sitting with them at the lake. Cats are truly amazing animals. My mom buys me all the books. This is a collection that i will forever keep.
One of the Three... December 2, 2009 Jozy Sanlar 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I had been anticipating this read for such a long time that as soon as it came out, I ordered it. When it arrived at the house, I nearly tripped over so many things rushing to read it. In "The Fourth Apprentice", Jayfeather and Lionblaze are trying to find the last cat that will have special powers like them. There is also a severe drought caused by the fact that there is no water flowing in from the stream and into the lake.
I finished this book so fast - almost too fast, if you ask me. I guess I'll just have to sit and wait until the next comes out.
Read it. You will not be disappointed!
