Buy this box set - and then STOP and wait for the new series November 8, 2009 L. Gildart (Somerville, MA USA) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
The first three books in the Power of Three Series are as well-written as these books get. They are thrilling, suspenseful, and they offer much to discuss with your young reader. If you are inclined to talk about these things, they offer opportunities to explore religion, cultural differences, the deaths of loved ones, without the upset that inheres in similar books that have people as characters.
All three of the first installments of this series owe much to the Wrinkle in Time Quintet, with the most obvious parallels being to An Acceptable Time and A Swiftly Tilting Planet. Jaykit, one of the Three, strongly recalls Charles Wallace Murry, and Hollykit, at least in these three books, seems quite similar to both Meg Murry and her daughter Polly O'Keefe (in fact, if the Erin Hunter team had spent a bit more quality time with some of the Meg and Polly-centered books, they might have avoided some of my issues with the last three books in this series).
These books deftly lay out the bones of the long-arc story, a mystery regarding the three and their powers, while offering page-turning short-arcs that keep young readers (and this OLD one) turning the pages until the books are finished. The final three books of the series have serious issues with both plot and characterization. But, thanks to this box set, you can save some money and stop here and go directly into the next series, which, one hopes, will be better.
Too bad the Erin Hunter team did not do the same.
The Best Ever! January 11, 2010 SheCat852 (Rochester, NY) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I'm hooked on this series of books in a big way. I'm not a kid either, & don't honestly believe this would be a book/series for any kid under the age of 13. They are stories about survival & remind me of Native American books set in prehistoric times.
But for the adult with a fascination for cats, this is the best I've read in a long time. For those who rescue feral cats & are upset by moments of blood & fighting, you probably wouldn't like it. But the entire series of Warrior books are a treasure & I can't put them down. I'm going into withdrawal now, waiting for Book #6 to be delivered in the Power of 3 Series. I can't wait for the next series of Warrior tales to come out! Good job, Erin Hunter! Keep it up - you have a true fan here.
